The Hidden Cost of No Parking In Vancouver
A loss of parking, a lack of space, an ever-growing frustration - with the announcement that Vancouver would no longer require minimum requirements to accommodate vehicles, residents began to despair. New urban housing could avoid onsite garages, and assigned slots could be entirely removed. This would force drivers away from their buildings and onto the streets beyond.

It would also force a series of unexpected costs.

With parking protections now gone, residents may find themselves seeking alternatives - and none will be welcome. Currently, Vancouver's residential permit system demands high annual costs, averaging between $105 to nearly $500 per year. These spaces are limited, however, and will quickly be secured.... leaving drivers to seek out available garages. These fees vary wildly (the River District offers spaces for approximately $1,800 per year; while downtown options may reach more than $3,500 annually).

Meanwhile, for those forced to endure parking meters, an average cost of $2 per day will quickly accumulate - generating over $1,000 in total fees per year. This, of course, assumes that drivers avoid being ticketed for violations (if not, expect up to $70 in traffic fines).

The loss of parking protections promises to wreak havoc on patience and budgets alike - with drivers forced to bear the cost.
